As you all know, the school year is nearing its end and so it's about time to vote for your new SOS executive for 2010/2011! Nominations are now closed and here are your candidates! Remember, the executive are not only responsible for helping the incoming class transition into university and organizing events-- they are also effectively representing the class of 2009/2010!

Voting takes place from March 15-18 at the Science One Lounge during lunch hours.

Choose wisely and happy voting :D

President

Tracey Hinder
My experience as Science One representative on SUS council has let me plan many events and understand the needs and wants of the Science One class. I am truly proud to be a Sci-1er and I would love to spread this joy to future (and present, and past) Science One students. Also, I have some ideas for SOS events next year that I think many would enjoy!

Sean Lee
A year has almost gone by, and it was my pleasure to represent our class at the SOS committee as SOS rep through this year. I hope everyone has found SOS valuable in surviving their first year, and enjoyed the events that we have planned for everyone. I've certainly had fun getting to know the SOS committee, and Science One 09/10. I've gained valuable experience on how the club operates, what works, what doesn't, and how it can be improved for next year. I would like to carry this responsibility over to next year to make next year even better for Science One 10/11. Cheers!

Dominic Tong
Vote Dominic Tong for President and Social Coordinator! He's friendly, approachable, and a sprinkle of teehee! Yes, that's right! Teehee! It’s time for some FUN in Science One, and who better to bring it than the man with teehee? Oh and do vote because I have led: sushi night (many of you will remember), a Canned Food Drive at high school, the 24 hour SeaFast where millions were raised for Schools for Africa, and had a good lot of fun while doing it! Okay, the millions were a lie, but we can all dream =).
So vote teehee! Vote Dominic!
Cause it’s about time there was some FUN in SciONE!"

VP External

Brian Cho
About me...
In my high school, I was successfully involved in demanding but worthwhile clubs. These included IB Council, Project Share, and Environmental Protection Network. I attended a school of 1600 students, and as you can imagine, the student-run clubs were numerous and diverse. Rather than joining all of them, I chose to join the abovementioned three clubs and focus my attention and passion of helping my fellow students, the homeless in downtown, and the environment, respectively. In fact, I was cofounder of the IB Council, secretary of Project Share, and treasurer of the Environmental Protection Network.
Why I want to be SOS VP internal/external...
I wish to continue to focus my passion of helping others by serving on the SOS executive. I hope to help the bright minds of tomorrow that is the Science One class of 10/11. That is, I truly want to give back to the science community by serving Science One next year. With this in mind, I announce my candidacy for VP internal and external, pledging not only to plan thrilling events, but also to execute them with utmost spirit.

I would like to nominate myself for the position of VP internal and Secretary of SOS2010-2011. I think I'd make a good VP internal because I have had past experience as a VP of the physics club that participated in the annual physics Olympics hosted at UBC. I am also currently working as a member of the executive team of the dollar project. My duties include relay informations between our executive team and applicants to a conference that we are organizing right now. This helps me gain valuable experience as a secretary. Most importantly I think I am responsibility driven and will dedicate myself diligently to the job.

Sabrina Kuah
Throughout the school year, I have, along with my fellow Science Oners experienced many of the ups and downs of living the lives typical of Science One students. I think it is important, as a club named the Science One Survivors to be able to extend our newly found knowledge to the next generation. I am running for a position in this club because I believe I bring the enthusiasm. I hope to be able to offer the class of 10-11 an SOS club that can be there to help them through not only school work, but also the transition from highschool to university. A group of ex-scioners that can share their experiences and be there for them. I also hope to be able to offer both classes, 09-10 and 10-11, "fun" activities to alleviate stress as well as build on friendships. theend. kthxbai.

Roger Zhang
Hey it's Roger here and I want to be your VP Internal for SOS. I've got tons of experience organizing and planning events, everything from club meetings to large conferences. In my Grade 12 year I planned and ran a three-day conference involving speakers like Senator Mobina Jaffer and Bard on the Beach director Christopher Gaze as well as a three-day retreat for new grade 11's entering my IB program. I've also got the leadership to initiate new activities for both you and the new Sci 1ers; for example I started a program at my high school tackling the problem of invasive species at Stanley Park that has cleaned up several acres of the park. I know I've got the skills and experience to do the job and I'm real excited for the chance to represent my fellow Sci 1ers! So remember, when voting week rolls around, vote ROGER ZHANG for VP internal!

Treasurer

Jason Hui
I believe I am a good fit for the position of Treasurer as I have always been good at handling money, I feel that with my ability to think outside the box, Science One 10-11 can better utilize their money spending and thus have the privilege to enjoy more activities and fun.
I also feel that I could make a pretty good Social Coordinator, I say this because I have always been the one who organizes activities for me and my friends, so I have quite a bit of experience in that aspect.

Cathy Wang
I am qualified for this position because I am committed to bringing the best possible experiences to next year's group of Science One-ers. I want to help create meaningful events that students will remember as the highlight of their university life. For the past 3 years, I was the coordinator of 30 Hour Famine at my high school and I would love to lend my experiences to this position. VOTE CATHY FOR TREASURER!

Secretary and Director of Publications

Rachel Chang
I, Rachel Chang, would like to nominate myself for the position of Secretary in the upcoming SOS Elections for the 2010-2011 SOS Executives. I believe that I am well-suited for this position because I am a very organized person and have many of the necessary skills required for this position. Although I have not played a major part in the organization of any event or club previously, I wish to start my experience now and fulfill the duties of a secretary to their fullest capacities and serve as a helpful mentor for the 2010-2011 class of Science One. I also enjoy writing messages a lot, so sending out newsletters and occasional messages to inform students of upcoming events will come naturally for me.

Alice Hou
I really care about future Science One students and have been actively involved in new student orientation. I founded a program at my high school to help grade 8s transition to high school and I am actively involved in tutoring and helping/advising future university students and perfect strangers with post-secondary and scholarship applications. As a hard-core journalist, I have the skills and experience it takes to run this part of SOS. I initiated a youth paper and have been writing non-stop and mentoring writers for the past 4 years. My obsession with checking my email and facebook about every three minutes will help and if you've ever been unfortunate enough to work with me on a project, you'll know that I'm an organization freak. My number one goal is to get to know next year's Science One students and make it their best year ever!

Jessica Zhang
I think that I'm a good candidate for the Secretary position because I believe that I have the skills, the passion, and because I recognize the importance of this position. The Secretary is the one who communicates with the club executives and members, and link them together.
Communication is incredibly important to me, and I would love to help facilitate communication between the executives, the members, the club as a whole, and the outside world. I probably have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder with checking my email (I check every other minute or even more frequently...), and replying on time, so I would be good at managing the SOS inbox.
I'm very sociable and easy to talk to, and I really care a lot about details and communication. I can be reached through email/MSN/phone all the time, so I could help out the executives with planning and arranging events.
I could help out with technical stuff like managing the blog and designing graphics/logos (I was the head of Technical Assistance and Graphic Design for my high school yearbook, I made the Graduation Slideshow, and I've made a few personal websites.) as well, so I'm a well-rounded candidate for the secretary position. Thanks for your consideration :D

Sports Coordinator

Joe Ahn
We all know that our university life should not be just limited to academics, and that includes the life of Science One students as well. I am realizing that many current Science Oners are lacking a significant amount of physical exercise. It could be that they are super lazy or hate running around, but as far as I know, there hasn’t been any fun sports event organized by the SOS; I’m sure they would have been more physically active if there was. That’s why I really want to become the SOS sports coordinator for the next year’s science oners, and I believe that I am the perfect candidate for this position. I am one of those versatile guys who are pretty good at every sport. I used to play soccer, basketball, table tennis, tennis, football, etc. back in high school, and is probably the MVP right now in my ultimate club Over Zero. Well, just loving sports and being exceptional at sports does not mean that I should be perfect for the sports coordinator, but I’m sure that my 2 years of organizing various school events as an active member of the school student committee, or my 3 months of coordinating sports events dedicated for youth in the community, wouldn’t be bad. So if you need something different this year, then you definitely need me as the sports coordinator.

Social Coordinator (2 positions)

Alice Hou
Wait... Science One students have SOCIAL LIVES!!!?????
Well, despite the stereotype, I'm determined to help next year's students have more of a social life than I've had this year. My number one goal is to get to know next year's Science One students and make it their best year ever. I would really like to take advantage of unproductive (for me, at least) lunch hours to plan more productive things for Science One students to do than sitting around getting yelled at by Lucia. I really care about future Science One students and have been actively involved in new student orientation. I founded a program at my high school to help grade 8s transition to high school and I am actively involved in tutoring and helping/advising future university students with post-secondary and scholarship applications. And I'm pretty good at planning events, if I do say so myself.
