SOS Elections 11/12

Hey everyone!

Here are the list of candidates running to be the SOS Executive next year. Voting will take place in the Science One Lounge from 1:00-2:00pm on Wednesday, 12:30-2:00 pm on Thursday, and 12:00-2:00 pm on Friday. Results will be announced next weekend. Campaigning rules are simple: no spending any money, no in-class announcements, and no mass emails using Science One mailing lists. Good luck to all the candidates!

President

Annie Chen

During my year as the First Year Representative for SOS, I have learned alot about the good and bad aspects of Science One. This means that if I am elected next year, I can provide valuable opinions on what can be improved, what can be kept, and most importantly, I can also provide fresh new ideas. I've had alot of fun throughout this year with the SciOne class of 2011, and I hope that next year's class can have as much, if not more, fun than we have had. :)

Kathy Lee

I was pretty indifferent to clubs and events going on at my school until last year, when my friend suggested that I be the co-founder of Multicultural Club. I have to admit, as much as running the club and organizing events, I was busy chasing the indifferent members like my former self, to get them to at least come out to meetings. The club wasn’t a huge success, but during the last few months of high school, I have seen it grow and I have witnessed how everyone’s hard work pays off. I strongly believe that the experience will help me as the president next year, as I now understand the responsibilities of a leader and the importance of involvement of every member that constitutes the club. I will do the same for this club—work hard as if we were starting from scratch and endorse active participation to make it a success, so vote for Kathy Lee! : )

Simon Tai

My name is Simon Tai, I am writing this to express my interest in running for 1) President and 2) Treasurer. I have had many leadership experience in high school being a grad committee leader, ultimate frisbee team captain and member of several other clubs. I am also well involved in my first year at UBC as a member of UBC Mens Ultimate Frisbee team, UBC Dance Club and several other clubs. My
experience from the past will benefit me for the position of President or Treasurer. I love photography, sports, and plain hanging out. I am a great listener and love interacting with my peers. Once again I would like to be the SOS President or Treasurer for the academic year of 2011-2012.

Vice President Internal

Annie Chen

Joshua Cheng

I think I am a good candidate for VP Internal because I want to help next year's SciOners to survive Sci1 as unscarred as possible. I want to make sure that they can have people to ask for help when they're struggling with the workload. I'm also good at making schedules, communicating with key people, and I already know how to set up an election.

Jay Chi

My name is Jay Chi and I currently am in the Science One program. I would like to self-nominate for the VP-Internal or Secretary position. Being a club executive to me is all about responsibility and leadership. I feel I have innovative ideas for the club and both these positions would be ideal for me. This is because I would not only be able to listen to the discourse of ideas and provide my own insight, but I am an efficient, organized person suited for a position such as VP Internal or Secretary.

Eunice Kwok

I feel that I will be a great candidate for VP internal as I was a major contributor in my high school leadership class and held executive positions in many clubs. In the Science One program, I actively create events for my fellow classmates, such as a Halloween party, Secret Santa and a blood drive for the Partners For Life program with Canadian Blood Services. Outside of school I am currently involved in organizing the Chinese Stem Cell day for One Match. All in all, I believe I will be a spectacular addition to next year’s SOS team.

Meiying Zhuang

Hey everyone! I believe I am a strong candidate for the position of VP Internal because I am extremely organized, enthusiastic, and outgoing. Additionally, I have experience coordinating and running large group events, such as my high school’s Grad photo shoot. The transition from high school to university is tough, and the SciOne course load makes it even harder. This year’s SOS gave us invaluable advice and I want to take what I learned from my experience with SOS study sessions to improve their effectiveness for next year’s class. So remember to vote for me!! Thank you! :D

Vice President External

Christine Cheung

Hi everyone! This is Christine and I'm running to be the VP External or Social Coordinator for the SOS executives next year. I had a lot of fun working with SUS this year as part of their Science Week Events Committee and it would be awesome if I could represent SOS on SUS next year as the VP External. I'm organized and responsible and will work hard to plan successful and exciting events for our incoming Science One students. So please....VOTE FOR CHRISTINE!

Laura Han

I would like to run for the positions of Social Coordinator and VP External. I believe that I have the capabilities of carrying out these positions. During my high school years, I served as the secretary for my school's student council; I sent out weekly meeting minutes and helped plan and execute numerous school events such as dances, spirit weeks, and the 30 Hour Famine. Furthermore, I was also an executive member of the school district's student leader council, through which I helped organize and run district-wide events. Through these positions, I gained experience in handling responsibilities of outside commitment while keeping up with my studies. Knowing how tough Science One can be, I am fully dedicated to creating fun and enjoyable experiences for future SciOne-ers. :)

Susan Park

I think I am deserving of the position(s) because I have a lot of experience in planning events and taking on leadership roles due to joining various clubs throughout high school. Although I don't enjoy planning as much as I would like, I like seeing the final result , and I can always get the job done and on time, and usually if a task isn't completed i'll take it on myself if no one else is getting it done. And for second year, I think I would like to try to get involved rather than burying my nose in studying all the time.

Jiawei (Eileen) Xu

Hello fellow classmates, in a matter of few weeks we can officially label ourselves as Science One Survivors =) In celebrating a successful year, it is also time to think about the ways we can make SciOne more enjoyable for next year students. I am willing to take on the challenge, and I believe together we can make a difference in their university experience.

Treasurer

Annie Zheng

This year in science one has been challenging for many of us; fortunately, Science One Survivors has organized many events to help us academically as well as to engage us in other fun activities. I am running for treasurer so that next year, more exciting activities can be provided! I am responsible with money and can plan and stick to a budget. If I were elected, I would communicate with the president and you guys to make sure you get all the sports, social, and academic events YOU want!

Secretary

Joshua Cheng

I think I'm a good candidate for Secretary because I can write, I can type quickly and accurately, I can send timely emails, and I have had experience editing and writing event-related articles (Yearbook editor). I'm also one of the (probably/hopefully) few guys to run for Secretary too :D

Now that the end of term 2 is drawing near, I will soon be a legitimate survivor of Science One (fingers-crossed). After experiencing eight months of this program, I hope to help the future Science One students successfully complete this program with as less trauma as possible. I am an organized and responsible individual, ready to incorporate a little fun into the lives of future students and to lower their stress levels at the same time. Whether it be arranging class bonding events or study/cram sessions (coffee and food provided), I welcome my current classmates to join us and reminisce.

Sports Representative

Kathy Lee

One of my greatest passions is playing ultimate. However, it is underrepresented and oftentimes ridiculed. For these reasons, recruiting members and finding a sponsor teacher to keep the team going were the greatest challenges facing our school team every year. I am working with the current sports coordinator in SOS as a co-captain of the team “Science Won” in the intramural ultimate league. This team has also faced the same problem, of recruiting enough committed Sci1 students. In fact, every Sunday we face this problem due to shortage of athletes. But we made it happen. We never once forfeited a game. I want the future Sci1 students to also have the opportunity to play in the team and participate in other sports events that will strengthen the bonds with their fellow classmates. You can make it happen. Vote for me.
